PS3 Slim and a Price Cut

Rumors of the Slim have been flying around since the PS3 launch but now finally the umpa-lumpas at Sony have turned our dreams into this…

Officially announced at Sony’s Gamescom press conference. The svelte new version boasts a 33% reduction of booty and 34% reduction in power slurpage due to the move down to 45nm fabrication.

But as Sony giveth the Slim, it taketh away the ability to install Linux. (At least until clever hackers figure out a way to circumvent this newly imposed limitation.)

Hence forth may the original be reffered to as: PS3 Phat

Oh yeah, they also dropped the price for both the Slim and the Phat to $299.

Return to Rapture Delayed

Take Two announced with their quarterly financials they plan to push BioShock 2 to next year.

From the press release

Take-Two is reducing its fiscal 2009 guidance to reflect several factors, most significant of which is the movement of the launch of BioShock 2 from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 to fiscal 2010, in order to provide additional development time for the title. Additionally, Take-Two is updating third quarter and fourth quarter fiscal 2009 guidance to reflect reduced sales of catalog products and lower than anticipated initial retailer orders of new releases, due to a retail environment that is proving even more challenging than the Company’s previous expectations.

E3 - Sony Demo’s Back

In an attempt to steal Natal’s thunder, Sony unveiled a prototype of their new motion control system.

I have to agree with them that sometimes you need a button. I’m not entirely sure what direction this is taking things. While everyone makes a big deal about the novelty of the Wiimote. I think it’s only part of the success story: it’s priced lower, it introduced casual party games, it doesn’t require an HD TV, and parents are more comfortable buying little Johnny a console that doesn’t support GTA. I’m happy to see innovation, but I doubt motion controls will significantly increase sales. I would also hate to see all the focus put on casual party games with bright happy color palettes.

Sony PS3 Motion Controller

It looks like both Sony and Microsoft are scrambling to catch up to the Wii. Rumor has it that Sony will unveil a motion camera (better than Eye) that will be more accurate than the Wii motion sensor.

Supposedly it uses LEDs to track movement. More information is here.
